Skin and Caffeine

How dare I threat your morning ritual, you say? Yes, I know this is a tough pill to swallow, potentially nixing coffee, but your skin and body will love you for it. I was just talking to my bestie @angelkistwellness about it and we were both sharing stories about how poorly our skin had reacted to caffeinated coffee. She recited bumpiness, uneven texture and how her makeup didn't sit right. I noticed cystic acne and dehydration.

We've both been off coffee for awhile now, but why does it have such a negative effect? Well the alertness that we get from caffeine is basically a stress response in the body similar to Fight or Flight mode and that's why we feel so awake. Along with that, it stimulates your adrenals to produce the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol suppresses the immune system, increases inflammation, and also causes people to produce more oil. That is a sticky situation that leads to acne or congested, bumpy skin texture.

On top of all that, caffeine causes dehydration, which stunts the body's detoxification process and also depletes the body's necessary amount of water required for optimal health. Dehydration also causes a spike in oil production because the body is trying to make up for the lack of moisture in the skin and since it cannot produce water itself, it produces more oil to attempt to lubricate the skin, but in turn, ends up getting waxy and clogged within your pore because there isn't enough water content for it to be soft enough to efficiently be excreted fully from within the pore to the top of your skin.

Overall, stress and dehydration isn't conducive to your general health. I say, do a coffee alternative like
Dandy Blend or drink decaf herbal tea, or decaf coffee which has way less caffeine. Have you noticed any side effects from caffeine? Comment below! 👇
